The MET Gala is a time for some of our favorite red carpet kings and queens to slay and bring their best looks to the year’s designated theme. Unfortunately, one of our faves is opting out of this year’s festivities.
Actress and budding fashion icon Zendaya will not be attending this year’s MET Gala, as reported by Teen Vogue. During an Extra interview with her Dune costar Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya revealed the news of her upcoming absence. While Chamalet expressed his excitement for the annual gala, shortly after the K.C. Undercover star broke the heartbreaking news. “I will be on Euphoria,” said Zendaya. “My fans are very upset with me. I will unfortunately not be able to attend because I’ll be working for Euphoria. I wish I could, especially since this fashion icon is going to be hosting,” Zendaya referred to Chamalet, who will also be serving as a co-chair alongside Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka.
When the interviewer shared her favorite look of Z’s being her MET Gala “camp” rendition of Cinderella’s dress, styled by the one and only Law Roach, the Malcolm & Marie actress jokingly expressed her stress. “That one almost took me out. Let me tell you,” she said.
We’re sad the former ESSENCE cover star won’t be in attendance, as we’ve appreciated her previous looks. In 2019, she gave us camp Cinderella with a animatronic Tommy Hilfiger dress that glowed. The theme for that year was “Notes on Camp.” The previous year, for the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” Zendaya took inspiration from Joan of Arc, the teenager who famously led a French army to victory and was later executed by the English for heresy.
Zendaya has attended each MET Gala since 2015.
