This Initiative Is Investing $7.2M In Scholarships For STEM Students Who Attend HBCUs
WASHINGTON DC – MAY 13: Angel C. Dye (left) celebrating the day with her best friend Renee Walter after The 2017 Howard University Commencement Ceremony in Washington, DC on May, 13, 2017. In 2016, Angel Dye was trying to pursue her Howard University education, but like scores of other students at the prominent, financially strapped HBCU, she owed thousands, and had been kicked out of her dorm room and still took classes on the down low. A year later Dye receives her degree today, with the help of donors who read her story and is headed to graduate school. (Photo by Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post via Getty Images)

If you’re a high school senior who’s looking to major in science, technology, engineering or math, MIQA or technical/operation manufacturing and planning on attending an HBCU, you may qualify for a special scholarship!

In early February, American Chemistry Council (ACC), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), The Chemours Company and HBCU Week unveiled a diversity and inclusion initiative that will pour $72M into students who fit the aforementioned bill. Due to their generous efforts, about 150 scholars will have the chance to receive the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) scholarship for those who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Each student selected will be granted $40,000, which will be doled out in installments of $10,000 per year over the course of 4 years. Students who are chosen will also be privy to internship preparation/placement, leadership training, mentorship and more.

Article continues after video.

“I am proud of this partnership between the HBCU Week Foundation, AIChE, the American Chemistry Council, and Chemours,” said Ashley Christopher, Founder and CEO of the HBCU Week Foundation, in a press statement. “It is through partnerships like these, that Black and brown children nationwide can actualize their full potential at HBCUs while minimizing the burden of student debt.”
