A popular thread by Twitter user @Piscessfinest began to circulate Wednesday. The content? A series of photos, showing women flexing their FUPAs.
For those who don’t know what FUPA means, it’s an acronym for “fat upper pubic area”. It’s basically your lower stomach, and can sometimes develop after you have a baby, lose weight quickly or simply just breathe.
Although some people have used the presence of FUPA’s to make women feel bad about themselves or their health journeys, having one is not a bad thing. It’s a championship belt. It’s also is a reminder that you’ve lived and that you’ve changed—which are good indicators for a fulfilling life.
Beyoncé spoke about her FUPA during a write up for Vogue in 2019. “I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it,” she said. “I think it’s real. Whenever I’m ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast zone and work my ass off until I have it. But right now, my little FUPA and I feel like we are meant to be.”
If Beyoncé can make history (I mean, she was the first Black woman to headline Coachella) with her FUPA, so can I.
I’ve had a FUPA for years, long before I knew it had a name. But I wasn’t always comfortable with it. I remember standing in the mirror and looking at it, wondering if it would just go away for the night so I could confidently sport an outfit.
What I had to realize though is that confidence is not something you gain when you achieve a physical goal. It’s possible to be fully comfortable in your skin exactly where you are in the journey. In fact, that’s true confidence. So now, I rock my FUPA with pride.
I’m grateful for my body. It has gotten me to where I am today, and it would be foolish to disrespect it. So I’m going to make sure I love on my FUPA extra hard today, and you should too.
