Many people, thanks to social media’s aesthetic content, are in a quest for a perfect smile and have found a new source outside of traditional dentistry and that is veneer technicians. Often quicker and cheaper, the rise in veneer technicians has been notable in recent years, driven by the increasing demand for aesthetic dental solutions. For those who don’t know, veneers are thin shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth and offer a quick fix for various dental imperfections, such as discoloration, chips and minor misalignments.
This growing popularity has led to a surge in the number of veneer technicians who offer these services at lower costs than traditional dental clinics. While this can make cosmetic dental enhancements more accessible to a broader audience, it raises significant concerns regarding safety, efficacy and patients’ overall health. Several TikToks and Instagram reels have been posted throughout social media, commenting on the rise of new dental alternatives. “People are not thinking two steps ahead because once these are on, who’s going to take them off?” Dr. Joyce Kahng says in a TikTok video.
One primary concern with opting for veneer technicians over licensed dentists is the lack of comprehensive training and expertise. “Dentists complete over years of education to perform quality veneers,” dentist Dr. Arlene A. Asante tells GU. They also have an educational background in managing patients’ dental care.”
Girls United contacted a few veneer technicians for comment but received no response.
Dentists undergo extensive education, including years of formal schooling, clinical practice, and continuing education, to ensure they are well-versed in cosmetic and general dental care. “This oversight ensures that they provide high-quality care and adhere to best practices in dental treatment,” she says. This gap in knowledge can result in suboptimal outcomes and potential complications that a qualified dentist would be better equipped to prevent and manage. Though the results of veneers look clean-cut and fresh, there’s a high maintenance that many people don’t speak about.
Dental specialists must conduct thorough examinations, including X-rays and assessments of the patient’s overall dental health, before recommending veneers. They consider factors such as bite alignment, gum health, and underlying dental issues that could impact the success of veneer applications. Veneer technicians, lacking this comprehensive diagnostic approach, may overlook significant dental problems, leading to treatments that can exacerbate existing conditions or create new ones.
“Patients should look for the shape and color of the veneer to identify if they are not of quality,” Asante says. “Commonly, veneer technicians [cannot access] high-quality laboratories that make the veneers. Therefore, the veneers that appear “Bulky,” abnormally shaped, and not symmetrical do not fit the patient’s face design and shape. Dentists can ensure the veneer is customized and the fitting is precise to ensure a natural look and comfortable fit.”

Licensed dentists typically use high-quality, durable materials that have been tested for safety and longevity. These materials are often more expensive, reflected in the treatment cost. Patients may need corrective treatments sooner than expected, negating initial cost savings and potentially causing further dental damage. “Dentists have the expertise to make necessary adjustments and ensure that veneers complement the patient’s overall dental structure,” Asante says.
In addition to these material concerns, the technical skill required to properly apply veneers is substantial. Veneer placement demands precision and an understanding of dental anatomy to ensure a natural look and a secure fit. Poorly fitted veneers can lead to issues such as increased tooth sensitivity, difficulty maintaining oral hygiene, and even damage to the underlying teeth and gums.
Dentists have comprehensive education in diagnosing, treating, and managing overall dental health, ensuring the suitability and safety of veneers for each patient. Anyone considering veneers should weigh these factors carefully and consult a licensed dentist to ensure their dental health and safety are not compromised. The short-term savings provided by veneer technicians could lead to long-term health issues and greater financial costs down the line. “Ensure the dentist is licensed and has extensive experience with veneer placement,” Asante says. “Look for dentists specializing in cosmetic dentistry with positive reviews or testimonials from previous patients.”
