What Does Back To School Look Like For Someone Who Is Neurodivergent?

As we prepare for the fall semester, more and more students are returning to classes and dorm rooms across the country. They are positioning themselves to get back into the rhythm of attending lectures, managing internships, and completing homework assignments.

For many, the school year can be a wonderful time; however, it is essential to remember that school can also present challenges, particularly for those who are neurodivergent. Neurodivergent is an umbrella term used to describe the differences in the way a person’s brain operates compared to someone who is neurotypical. Although “neurodivergent” is not a medical term, it was coined by sociologist Judy Singer to highlight the uniqueness of each person’s brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 15-20% of the world’s population exhibits some form of neurodivergence. This can result from a medical issue, a learning difference, or other conditions. Common conditions include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and mental health issues such as bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety.

Everyone’s brain is different. While some neurodivergent individuals possess many unique strengths, neurodivergence can also make everyday tasks more challenging. A person’s strengths and differences are unique to them, and this can lead many students to require a little extra assistance during the school year. In an educational setting, neurodivergent individuals may struggle with traditional functions necessary for success, such as executive functioning skills like time management, planning, or maintaining attention during lectures. Additionally, neurodivergence can extend beyond executive functioning to emotional, mental, and physical differences, ultimately complicating the back-to-school season. Students may find it difficult to communicate effectively for group projects or may face challenges related to mental health conditions like clinical depression, which can complicate their daily lives. For example, Victoria Handy, a mother on the autism spectrum and an Autism Speaks Champion of Change, shared that during her college years, she often experienced bullying from those who identified as neurotypical. Handy frequently felt misunderstood and became the target of harmful jokes and pranks due to her ASD, which ultimately led to mental health issues that affected her academic performance.

For students needing extra help managing their coursework and the demands of college life, most colleges and universities offer resources designed to assist. Mia Love, a neurodivergent educator and coach with over 25 years of experience working with students, recommends that students seek out resources on their college campuses. Depending on the institution, the Disability Resource Center or Diversity Access Center may provide services such as exam accommodations, mentorship, or housing assistance. Students are encouraged to visit these offices and discuss the accommodations they may be eligible for. According to Love, finding community is one of the best ways to navigate the challenges of being neurodivergent. She often highlights the accomplishments of well-known individuals like Simone Biles and Whoopi Goldberg, who openly discuss their differences. This serves as encouragement for students, showcasing the beauty that can come with a neurodivergent brain.

“Number one [tip] is just being comfortable disclosing your neurodivergence and making sure you speak to others who identify as neurodivergent,” said Love. “Speak up and let people know that this is my reality. This is not a disability; this is a superpower. Find that common community and recognize who the other notable neurodivergent individuals are.”

As the school year begins, remember to be gentle with those around you. Offer a helping hand when you can, and keep in mind that everyone’s college experience is unique. If you know someone who is neurodivergent, Handy suggests asking genuine questions. She often finds herself educating those around her and providing tips on how they can best support her as someone with ASD.
