It’s the last full week of August; college classes have started for some, while New York Fashion Week prep is well underway for others. This week’s theme? Sporty chic. A trend that’s flourished in the last year or so, thanks to ultracool brands Miu Miu, Sandy Liang, and Conner Ives. Its resurgence could be attributed to the competitive energy of the US Open, or perhaps creatives were yearning for stylish comfort as we roll into the final three weeks of summer. Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure: this week’s looks were all aces.
Leading the charge, style maven Mikah served up color blocking realness in a triple-wasted pastel yellow parachute skirt, a vintage Issey Miyake top in a beautiful blue plisse fabric, a shoulder bag with romantic ruffles in bold red, and dark blue split-toe Nikes. New York-based fashion creator Chelsea H posed in front of tennis courts in cream wide-leg pleated pants, a blue button-up, and the Jacquemus take-out clutch in croc-embossed red leather. Chelsea finished off the look with Nikes in a silver and white colorway, red nails, a matching bandana, and tasteful jewelry — proving just how versatile a “sporty chick” can be.
Not everyone caught the sporty bug, however. Digital creator Sia confirmed that jorts aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, pairing some in light-wash denim with a brown satin cowl neck top, a suede clutch, and dark shades. She also wore thong heels and large bangles, tapping into some of the summer’s biggest trends. Meanwhile, mogul and fashion designer Anifa took maternity style to a new level in a violet bubble shirt dress (from her own brand, Hanifa, obviously) and white pumps. She topped the look off with statement earrings and a leather handbag from Black-owned brand, Vavvoune.
Let’s be honest; Instagram can be the best place to find your next outfit. There is nothing wrong with grabbing a little inspiration from the Internet, and these creatives brought the best style this week.
