5 Black-Owned Restaurants To Try In New Orleans During Essence Festival

If you're traveling to New Orleans for Essence Festival or simply want to grab a bite while visiting, here are 5 Black-owned restaurants in the French Quarter and beyond to try out.
5 Black-Owned Restaurants To Try In New Orleans During Essence Festival
By Brianna Robles · Updated July 16, 2025

New Orleans is one of the country’s undeniable cultural epicenters. Known for its soulful jazz, warm locals, and lively Mardi Gras celebrations, the Crescent City draws more than 19 million visitors a year. But beyond the music and festivals, what truly anchors the city’s charm is its unforgettable food—especially its rich Cajun and Creole traditions.

From bananas foster and beignets to crawfish étouffée and jambalaya, New Orleans has long been a cradle for deeply seasoned, soulful cuisine. And whether you’re in town for ESSENCE Festival or just planning your next food crawl through the French Quarter, these five Black-owned restaurants should be at the top of your list.

Monday Restaurant + Bar

If you haven’t heard of Monday Restaurant + Bar—where have you been? Located at 4327 Bienville St., this buzzy hotspot comes from restaurateurs Larry Morrow and Lenora Chong, who are also behind Morrow’s. Known for delivering a whole vibe—whether you’re seated indoors or outside—Monday serves up a brunch to remember. Think: mimosa flights, sweet potato beignets, and perfectly grilled lamb chops over creamy grits. With a signature stamp of approval from food critic Keith Lee on TikTok, reservations are highly recommended.

Loretta’s Authentic Pralines

Yes, Café Du Monde and Café Beignet are NOLA staples—but if you want pralines and beignets, Loretta’s Authentic Pralines is the best of both worlds. Founded by Loretta Harrison—the first Black woman to own and operate her own praline business in New Orleans—Loretta’s is a must-stop. Their sweet and savory stuffed beignets (like crab or praline-powdered sugar) are unforgettable. You’ll find them at their French Market retail shop or the main café at 2101 N. Rampart St.

Biscuit & Buns On Banks

Tucked into 4337 Banks Street, Biscuit & Buns on Banks feels like being back in your grandma’s kitchen—with a Cajun twist. Their down-home charm and killer brunch menu keep locals and tourists coming back. Must-tries include their Louisiana BBQ shrimp and grits and fluffy house biscuits. It’s a small space, so head over early or place your order online to beat the rush.

Jamaican Jerk House

Located in the Upper 9th Ward at 4017 St. Claude Ave., Jamaican Jerk House brings Creole-Caribbean heat to the table. Another Keith Lee-approved gem, it may sit just outside the French Quarter, but it’s worth the ride. Grab the jerk chicken or shrimp tacos to-go if you’re hopping between events or looking for a quick, flavorful bite.

Looking to elevate your evening? Vyoone’s, located at 412 Girod Street in the Warehouse District, is a perfect blend of French sophistication and Afro-Creole flavor. It’s a stylish, Instagram-worthy setting ideal for date nights or dinner with the girls. From escargot to their fan-favorite French Onion Soup, Vyoone’s offers upscale dining with entrees ranging from $12 salads to $55 steak and BBQ shrimp plates.
