Creativity and music has always been at the root of Groovy’s life. Growing up in Union County, New Jersey, it was impossible not to be influenced and engaged by the energy and tempo that surrounded him. “When you’re a kid and one of your parents is passionate about something, you can’t help but fall into it,” Groovy reflected with GU. With DJ Awol as a father and a grandfather who owned a disco in the 70s, Groovy’s connection to music felt almost inevitable. “Music was something I always related to,” he says.
Groovy aims to create something more than just a sound. “Luv club is honestly a feeling” he says. His signature genre is “luv club” where he explains that people should be able to dance to music that also makes you feel something. Naturally, Groovy says love, dating, and relationships play a big role in his sound. His hits are designed to evoke both emotion and movement, blending the best of R&B to create an atmosphere that resonates deeply with his fans. Whether it’s joy, heartbreak, or somewhere in the middle, his music lets people explore these emotions, while having the energy from his songs.
Groovy’s latest EP, Crying in the Club, marks a pivotal moment in his artistic journey. From being a quiet, shy kid to completely finding his own voice was something that helped Groovy create his own unique sound and got inspiration for several of his songs on this EP. The project is an emotional exploration, capturing his growth in the music industry. “The EP reflects the emotions I experienced as I elevated. It’s about expressing vulnerability in a space that’s usually about having fun,” Groovy tells GU. The title of this distinctive album sums up that mix of energy and emotion that Groovy wanted to express and capture.
One of his recent songs, Jersey Luv, went viral on Tiktok which definitely put more eyes on his work and showed him the power of social media. From this, he learned that people react to music definitely which ultimately is an indicator to stay true to his own sound and keep creating without overthinking.
His first headlining show was a powerful experience that Groovy will remember forever. “I was blown away doing a show and seeing people of a variety of ages was beautiful, and I was grateful of everyone supporting me” he tells GU. Seeing everyone in the crowd was a moment that inspired Groovy as he wants to continue making more music that hits more people. He shares one of the most important lessons along the way, saying “the biggest thing I learned is that you have to make great music, but also give them a moment. The magic is in doing both.”
As he looks ahead of his career, Groovy is focused on growth. “My next era is about improving my vocals. I should always be sharpening my sword, and my sword is my voice,” Groovy told GU, emphasizing his commitment to pushing his artistry to new heights.
