After years of speculation, viewers are eager for answers. One direction the show will not take? A return to high school. “The one thing we all agreed on is we can’t go back to high school,” creator Sam Levinson said. That shift leaves major questions on the table: What happened to Rue? Did she ever pay Laurie back? Levinson offered a glimpse during HBO Max’s presentation on Wednesday. “We pick up Rue [Zendaya] south of the border in Mexico, in debt to Laurie [Kelly], trying to come up with some very innovative ways to pay it off.”
He also teased the evolution of Cassie and Nate’s famously toxic relationship. Was their breakup final? Apparently not. The two are now living together in the suburbs. Levinson revealed a surprising twist: “They’re engaged, and she’s very addicted to social media and envious of the seemingly big lives her high school classmates are now living.”
Meanwhile, Jules (Hunter Schafer) will be in art school pursuing a career as a painter, and Maddy (Alexa Demie) is now working in Hollywood at a talent agency. Fans curious about Lexi’s post-play journey can expect to see her working as an assistant to a showrunner played by Sharon Stone—a fitting next chapter for her emerging creative voice.
The season arrives under a cloud of loss. Fans continue to mourn Angus Cloud, who portrayed Fezco and passed away in July 2023 at age 25. It remains unclear how his absence shaped the new storyline. Colman Domingo (Ali) told Vanity Fair in 2024 that Fezco was originally poised to play a major role. “I’m sure it affected not only the creation of season three, because [Angus] was going to be a very strong part of it… We came together as a cast many times to grieve, to mourn, to laugh and enjoy all the things we know about Angus,” he said.
