Coco Gauff made another historical achievement by becoming the first US tennis player to be a flag bearer at the Paris Olympics. “I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA,” Gauff said in a statement. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world.”
Alongside LeBron James, the two will serve as the official flag bearers for the United States Olympic team at the opening ceremony. The 20-year-old received the news from her teammates that they’ve nominated her for the official role.
“I’m incredibly proud of Coco. I know how great she is as a tennis player, but more importantly, I know how great she is as a person,” fellow American tennis player Chris Eubanks said. “I don’t think anyone deserves this honor more.”
Both Gauff and James earned nominations from their teammates. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage,” she said.
The Gen Z’er continues to make history after winning two Grand Slam titles, including the U.S. Open championship. She is currently No. 2 in the world in the Women’s Tennis Association’s rankings. She is expected to compete in the singles and doubles on the courts at Roland Garros, where the Olympic tennis competition begins on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The opening ceremony for the Paris Games begins Friday, July 26, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. ET.
“I just want to say thank you to my fellow Team USA Olympians/athletes for voting and choosing me for this incredible honor to be the flag bearer for the opening ceremony,” Gauff tweeted. “Thank you so much. I am incredibly honored.”
