The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative umbrella organization consisting of historically African American fraternities and sororities, commonly referred to as the Divine Nine or Black Greek Letter Organizations. As Vice President Kamala Harris embarks on her campaign close to the presidency, interest in the D9 network has surged.
These nine organizations have significantly shaped Black American history and culture, contributing not only to the advancement of the African American community but to society as a whole. Jordan Visionary, a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha, has created photo shoot campaigns for artists such as Ludacris and Davido. How do individuals like him acquire the skills necessary for success?
GU spoke with several Divine Nine members to explore the benefits of joining a sorority or fraternity and how it has influenced their careers.
Personal Growth
Many D9 members emphasized the lifelong connections and essential leadership skills they developed through their organizations.
Evan Johnson, a consultant pharmacist, shared how her family’s influence led her to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She expressed immense gratitude for the support she received from her collegiate chapter:
“Alpha Kappa Alpha has had a tremendous impact on my life. We rely on each other for references and job opportunities. The sisterhood opened doors for me,” Evan told GU.
Michelle, a dynamic TikTok fashion content creator, discussed how Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated impacted her journey through corporate America and her fashion career on TikTok:
“The benefits of joining a sorority are numerous. I’ve gained a supportive community and lifelong connections. The leadership skills I’ve developed have prepared me for my future. Delta and other sororities operate like businesses, teaching me valuable skills that translated into my creative work,” Michelle shared.
Sheri Riley reflected on her time at LaFace Records, where she handled marketing for artists like Usher and TLC, before starting her own consulting firm, Glue. She noted how joining Delta Sigma Theta and connecting with fellow D9 members fueled her ambition:
“There’s a shared understanding of excellence among D9 members. It breaks down barriers and creates a powerful sense of community,” Sheri told GU.
Joshua B., a versatile Gen Z professional in corporate America and fashion content creation, shared how his fraternity shaped his journey:
“Alpha taught me to embrace my uniqueness and be bold. Don’t accept ‘no’ for an answer; persevere through challenges,” Joshua said.
Be Authentic & Learn Perseverance
Joining a sorority or fraternity instills perseverance. Joshua remarked, “My faith empowers me to believe in myself and in God. My strength comes not only from within but also from my faith.”
He referenced the poem “Invictus,” stating, “I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.” This mindset helped him secure multiple business deals and creative brand sponsorships with companies like Express Men, Revolt TV, and Topicals.
“My fraternity taught me to hold myself to a higher standard, allowing me to aim for the stars in every project,” Joshua shared.
Be Adaptable
Balancing professional and personal life is crucial. Joshua discussed how the skills and relationships gained through his fraternity helped him navigate social interactions in corporate America:
“To network effectively, you need to be sociable. Successful people understand their organization’s mission and values and can translate them to achieve goals,” Joshua explained.
Advice for Future Members
A key piece of advice emphasized by all members was the importance of aligning with an organization’s core values:
“Do your research. Understand how the organization’s principles align with your personal development, not just now but for the next 5 to 10 years. Ask yourself how you envision your future self,” Joshua advised.
“There must be a genuine love and commitment to the core principles of any sorority or fraternity you wish to join. We are more than just stepping at parties or being trendsetters; we strive to make a social impact through sisterhood, academics, and scholarship,” Sheri concluded.
