Chloe Bailey is in her own category, period.
Last week, Matthew Knowles took to an Instagram live interview to express his opinion about Bailey being compared to her famed mentor and his daughter, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. “Somebody is idiot enough to compare her to Beyoncé talent wise?,” Knowles scolded. “That’s actually insulting to Beyoncé.” While the comments were harsh, ESSENCE GU will take this as a moment to celebrate Chloe Bailey’s individuality as a singer, songwriter, actress and producer who is making a name for herself as a young Black queen in this industry.
We’ve created a list of some of the Grammy nominated songstress’ most memorable moments below to remind us why she’s a queen to be celebrated and not compared. Did we mention that she recently hit 2 million Instagram followers? You go, Chlo Chlo!
The #SilhouetteChallenge
Not even a week after her viral rendition of Tik Tok’s #BussItChallenge, Bailey gave her Instagram followers a “special performance” for the #SilhouetteChallenge. Celebrities including Snoh Aalegra, Storm Reid and Justine Skye sung her praises in the comments section as she gave us everything with her dance routine in her blue and violet UV lighted room. Alexa, cue Jeremih’s “All The Time.”
Major Production Skills
Her younger sister Halle Bailey has always noted in interviews that Chloe is not only a bomb singer and songwriter, but she has incredible producing skills. The internet went crazy when she uploaded a one-minute video to her Instagram giving us a peek into her on-the-fly creative process when throwing a beat together. We can’t wait to see what this 6LACK collaboration will look like!
Vocal Skills For Days
Since Chloe x Halle’s cover days of their mentor Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” and “Best Thing I Never Had,” Chloe’s voice has always given a melodic down tone not reminiscent of any other artist. Side by side with Halle’s sweet and angelic voice, the two sisters create an undeniably harmony guaranteed to send goosebumps down your spine as if you’re right there in the audience.
Top Notch Performance Skills
Chloe has never been shy on stage when it comes to expressing her love of dance. From Chloe x Halle’s medley performance of “Do It” and “Forgive Me” at Verizon Media’s #VerizonUp to their live rendition of “Ungodly Hour” at the E! People’s Choice Awards 2020, the older Bailey has always shown her sensual side unapologetically with every hip sway, hair flip and body roll. We love to see it.
Acting Chops
Bailey made her acting debut in The Fighting Temptations as Knowles’ younger self, Lilly. She has since made appearances in Last Holiday and Meet The Browns and is slated to star as Blake Holloway in The Georgetown Project. Today, you can catch Chloe on Freeform’s Grown-ish as Jazlyn Forster, one of the Forster twins who are superstar trackletes at Cal U. Catch her every Thursday night as Jazz balances qualifying for Olympic tryouts, her relationship with Doug (played by Diggy Simmons) and friendships with her crew.
