Explore how cosmetic procedures can be beneficial with insights from cosmetic professionals discussing the appropriate age and factors to consider before undergoing these treatments.
Here’s The Cosmetic Procedures Gen Z Are Getting And Is It Worth It?
The procedure of aesthetic medicine
By Amber Little · Updated September 22, 2025

Gen Z has become deeply involved in the beauty industry, and it is no surprise that this generation has shown an increasing interest in cosmetic surgery, often referred to as “The Tweakment Movement.” This trend focuses on achieving subtle enhancements rather than drastic changes. After speaking with several cosmetic professionals, it’s clear that some of the most popular cosmetic procedures among Gen Z vary from non-invasive treatments to invasive procedures. The top cosmetic procedures that has caught Gen Zer’s attention are vacuum Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL), non-invasive liposuction, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, Otoplasty, Botox, breast reductions, and facial contouring. While investing in cosmetic maintenance may seem tempting, Gen Zers should consider important factors before choosing cosmetic treatments, specifically analyzing their reasons behind their desire for these procedures. These methods have demonstrated that they can enhance overall one’s appearance and boost confidence, but is there such a thing as being too young for cosmetic procedures?

GU spoke with Scheleda V. Grimes, MS, APRN, FNP-BS, FNP-C, an injector at Charette Cosmetics in the Atlanta location, to discuss the ideal age to begin cosmetic treatments. She noted, “For most people, the right age to actually begin treatments is closer to 21. Here’s why: around your early to mid-20s, your body naturally starts to lose 1–2% of collagen every year. That slow but steady change is what eventually leads to fine lines, volume loss, and sagging down the line. Starting certain treatments early,  like medical-grade skincare, light neurotoxin (to soften expression lines before they deepen), or small amounts of filler (for balance, not overhaul) can help prevent aging instead of trying to reverse it later,” Grimes told GU. According to the American Med Spa Association, Gen Z has the highest adoption rate of non-surgical treatments, with reports indicating a 73% increase in Botox usage among this age group (ages 18-24). Younger patients are pursuing these treatments to address early signs of aging or to achieve a more refreshed look. Studies show that 55% of Gen Z feel compelled by influencers to undergo cosmetic procedures.

Thus, the real question isn’t whether Gen Z is considering cosmetic surgery but what drives them to explore these options. Social media continues to be a powerful influence across various industries, especially in cosmetics. Gen Z has demonstrated a significant increase in demand for cosmetic and preventative treatments. However, one should consider whether this perspective can be damaging to individuals who get these cosmetic surgeries too early. GU spoke with Dr. Jim N. Branter, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgery specialist with his private practice, to seek his advice for Gen Z patients considering cosmetic surgery. He emphasized the importance of reflecting on how they might feel about their decision in 10 years. Dr. Branter highlighted the significance of maturity, health, and physical limitations, noting that an individual’s body may change. He was not alone in sharing this perspective.

Multiple cosmetic professionals have highlighted that the body continues to change during late adolescence and early adulthood. If surgery is pursued too soon, the results may not last, potentially leading individuals to seek multiple surgeries. GU also spoke with Corrine Rodriguez, the owner of C Bodied It, where she specializes in body sculpting and cosmetic wellness. She emphasized this sentiment by noting, “I strongly encourage Gen Z clients to wait until their mid-20s (around 23 or older) before considering invasive procedures. Here’s why: Hips may continue to spread, fat distribution shifts, and metabolism changes significantly,” she said.

This can result in emotional distress amongst Gen Zers as they are still developing their identities and trying to adapt to beauty standards set by social media. Grimes highlighted the importance of understanding your motivations for considering cosmetic surgery. “The number one overlooked factor, in my professional opinion, is finding out the motivation: Is it because they want to look like a certain influencer/celebrity, or is there deeply rooted insecurities involved that physically changing your appearance cannot address. The psychological factor is important to discuss, especially with Gen Z,” Grimes said.

Some people tend to overlook the mental and emotional impact of cosmetic procedures. Therefore, it is vital for those interested in these treatments to fully understand the process before undergoing them. Grimes emphasized that aesthetic treatments should prioritize personal well-being. She stated,” If you’re considering aesthetic treatments, start with you at the center — not TikTok, not Instagram, not a trend, not what your favorite influencer just got done. Your beauty is already here; treatments should enhance that, not erase it. You are already beautiful or handsome,” she said.

With all of this being said, there are often taboo conversations surrounding cosmetic surgeries. Many individuals face an invisible uphill battle during their recovery from these procedures, which is rarely discussed. Rodriguez shared that her patients frequently experience doubts, body dysmorphia, or desires for more drastic results, all of which can significantly affect their mental and emotional well-being. She encourages her patients by saying, “My biggest piece of advice is: When you wake up from surgery, you’ll have a new body, but the same brain. Without the right mindset and habits, even the best results won’t be sustainable,” Rodriguez said.

However, there are benefits to receiving cosmetic surgery, which has led Gen Z to prefer non-invasive alternatives over traditional cosmetic procedures.  Rodriguez emphasized, “ For Gen Z, who are growing up in a digital age full of comparisons, procedures (especially non-invasive ones) can help them feel more confident and less self-conscious. That boost in self-esteem can affect everything from how they show up in social settings to how they carry themselves in professional environments. The key is balance and doing it for yourself, not because of extrinsic pressures,” Rodriguez told GU. Gen Z has embraced these treatments in an effort to live out loud to the fullest. However, it’s essential to recognize that one’s mental state is not the only factor to consider before cosmetic surgery. You should also consider how to financially prepare for these procedures, as they can be expensive. This financial aspect is another reason many Gen Z individuals are drawn to non-invasive cosmetic treatments.

Although these procedures can be less expensive than surgery, it is essential to have a financial plan in place before undergoing any procedure. Further underscoring Gen Z’s approach to progress towards non-invasive surgeries. Rodriguez divulged some of her financial tips that she gives clients, which entail saving beforehand instead of relying too heavily on financing, especially if it’s over $5,000. She stated, “It’s also important to budget for maintenance after surgery. Beyond the procedure itself, you’ll need massage packages, body sculpting treatments, high-quality shapewear like fajas or waist trainers, and even lifestyle costs such as healthy food, which can add up. I recommend having an extra $10K–15K set aside for these ongoing expenses so you can actually sustain your results without added stress,” she said. This will prevent Gen Zers from enduring significant expenses for years if a plan or savings is not set aside.

So, is cosmetic surgery worth it for Gen Z? Yes; cosmetic surgery can be worthwhile for Gen Z. Minimal cosmetic procedures can enhance confidence and help individuals avoid carrying insecurities in their 20s, which could affect them for years. Rodriquez stated, “For younger individuals, non-invasive treatments such as vacuum BBLs, body sculpting sessions, skin tightening, or light facial treatments are a safer place to start. These allow you to enhance your natural shape and build confidence without taking on the risks and long recovery times that come with surgery,” she said.  Grimes emphasized that for individuals aged 19-28, some of the most effective aesthetic treatments focus on prevention, targeting texture, collagen stimulation, pigmentation, and the prevention of deep fine lines.

That being said, the most significant factor that should be evaluated before undergoing cosmetic surgery is exercising patience in your body development. While preventative treatments can be beneficial, assess the potential physicians that you are considering to support you through your cosmetic journey by doing research to ensure they are qualified and safe. As our bodies continue to change throughout our early 20s, the areas we were once insecure about become the features we love the most.
