Let’s face it, ladies—taking proper care of our hair is one of the most important parts of our daily routines. From silk presses to nighttime headwear, it’s essential to adopt safe and effective methods that protect Afro-textured hair. Protective styles can be worn year-round, helping to prevent breakage and promote healthy growth. The summer season, however, brings a specific challenge: how do you care for your hair during one of the hottest—and harshest—times of the year?

Summer brings its own set of issues, from heat exhaustion to dehydration. For Afro hair, the season can be especially tricky without the right knowledge. Weather plays a major role in how natural hair behaves. Humidity and UV exposure can weaken the hair’s keratin, leaving it vulnerable to frizz, dryness, and breakage.

Tia Moore, lead stylist at Sweethead Naturals, has firsthand experience helping clients shield their hair from the harsh summer conditions.

“Summers are notoriously humid, and hair tends to absorb moisture from the air, leading to swelling, frizz, and increased vulnerability to breakage,” Moore says. “Protecting our hair in these months helps prevent damage and maintain healthy curls, coils, and locs.”

Natural textures are more prone to dryness and breakage, which means proactive care is essential. While many opt for protective styles in the summer, others may want to let their natural curls shine. Fortunately, there are healthy ways to approach both.

Anyone planning to wear their natural hair out should pay close attention to hydration, especially during warmer months. Individuals who haven’t prioritized moisturizing and conditioning should consider adding those steps to their routine.

“Moisturizing daily or every other day, cleansing weekly or biweekly, deep conditioning biweekly, and protecting hair nightly with satin or silk accessories are essential steps,” Moore advises.

Those who prefer protective styles are also making a great choice. Moore recommends low-maintenance, heat-friendly options like box braids, flat twists, buns, cornrows, and starter locs to keep hair healthy and manageable throughout the season.

Hair care products also play a key role in maintaining moisture and reducing damage. Moore recommends Sweethead Naturals’ signature line of essentials, including the Leave-In Elixir, Honey Moisture Butter, and Remedy Oil. These products help with daily hydration, moisture retention, and frizz control.

Whether you’re rocking a fresh set of braids or letting your curls fly free, make sure your hair receives the care it deserves this summer. A little extra attention can go a long way—especially if you’re planning a beach day with your bestie.
