The Grown Girl’s Guide To College Prep: 10 Things To Handle Before You Step On Campus

From transcripts to tuition and self-care—here are 10 things every incoming college girl should handle before stepping on campus.
The Grown Girl’s Guide To College Prep: 10 Things To Handle Before You Step On Campus

So you’ve committed to your school, posted the “future [insert mascot]” Instagram story, and probably bought some cute dorm stuff already. Love that for you! But before you get too deep into picking your bedspread color, let’s get into what you really need to handle this summer before stepping on campus.

College is more than the aesthetic and the first week’s welcome events. It’s a life change—and trust me, the smoother you make the transition, the easier you’ll breathe come move-in day. Here’s a list of ten very real things students often forget (or wait until the last minute to do). Consider this your ultimate summer checklist because anxiety? We don’t know her.

1. Register & Attend Your Orientation

Don’t wait until it’s too late! Orientation gives you your first authentic experience of campus life; skipping it can make you feel lost both socially and logistically. During orientation, you’ll receive your student ID, register for classes, and connect with potential lifelong friends. Many people underestimate its importance. Beyond the paperwork and academic preparations, it alleviates feelings of isolation. You’ll step onto campus already recognizing a few faces, which can make a significant difference.

2. Submit Final Transcripts and Test Scores

Your high school and any college credit transcripts need to be in. Your school needs those final grades to complete your file—especially if you’re getting scholarships or advanced placement. Without them, you could be stuck in entry-level classes you don’t need.

3. Return Health Forms

Every school is different, but most require up-to-date immunization records, physicals, and sometimes even health insurance waivers. Missing this step could put a hold on your account, which means you might not be able to register or move in.

4. Connect With Your Roommate

If you already know who you’re living with, reach out early! Discuss who’s bringing what (no need to show up with two things you can share), talk about sleep schedules, and set some early boundaries. You don’t need to be besties, but being on the same page helps a lot.

5. Get Familiar With Your Student Portal

Now’s the time to log in and make sure everything’s working. Whether your school uses Canvas, Blackboard, or something else, check that your classes are showing up, your financial aid info is listed, and nothing is missing. This is where professors will drop assignments and announcements—so getting comfortable now will save you from future confusion. Basically, this is your college command center.

6. Arrange Your Finances

Whether it’s setting up a bank account, applying for work-study, or just figuring out how your tuition will be paid, get clear on your money situation. And if you don’t understand your financial aid award letter? Ask questions now—not in a panic later.

7. Make a List of What to Bring

Before you haul your whole life to campus, make a list. Think: everyday necessities, seasonal clothing, electronics, storage bins, and emergency essentials (like medicine or a sewing kit). Pinterest is cute, but your dorm won’t fit your entire bedroom at home.

8. Earn Some Funds

College isn’t just tuition—textbooks, dorm dues, fast food runs, late-night Amazon orders—it all adds up. Summer is the perfect time to get a part-time job or side hustle so you’re not scrambling when it’s time to pay for that $200 chemistry book.

9. Contact Your Academic Advisor

A quick check-in can go a long way. They can help you pick the right classes for your major, tell you what to expect, or catch any issues that could delay your schedule. Pro tip: knowing them early makes it easier to ask for help later.

10. Take Care of YOU

This one’s not paperwork—it’s personal. Spend time with your family and friends, get rest, and mentally prep for this big life shift. College is exciting, but it’s also a lot. You deserve to enter this chapter grounded and emotionally ready.

College is a new start, but it has no pause button for real life. Get organized now, so you’re not overwhelmed later. Whether staying close to home or going out of state, this checklist will help you walk into the semester with your head high, your documents turned in, and your dorm vibe already set.

Now go ahead and enjoy your summer—but keep this tab open while you do. Your Hot Girl Semester awaits you!
