5 Empowering Black-Owned Athleisure Brands Redefining Comfort And Style

Discover how Black women-led athleisure brands like Body by Raven Tracy, STRIPT, and Waydamin are reshaping fashion with inclusivity, style, and sustainability.
5 Empowering Black-Owned Athleisure Brands Redefining Comfort And Style
By Nia Berkeley · Updated April 2, 2025

Whether you’re shopping, running errands, or walking your dog, athleisure is your best friend—and the best part? You don’t even need to hit the gym to rock it. The era of blending comfort with style has become a cultural movement, and Black women are leading the way, redefining what it means to be fly while staying cozy.

Athleisure is no longer just about what you wear to the gym—it’s a lifestyle. It’s about versatility, confidence, and embracing fashion that fits seamlessly into our daily routines. But beyond looking good, it’s also time to shop smarter. As we step into April, a month focused on Earth Day and sustainability, we must ask ourselves: How can we make more conscious fashion choices? Fast fashion has long dominated the market, churning out trendy yet low-quality pieces that contribute to excessive waste, pollution, and unethical labor practices. The athleisure industry is no exception, with big brands profiting off our love for comfort without prioritizing the people wearing their clothes.

One of the biggest names in athleisure, Lululemon, has faced backlash for its lack of inclusivity, reminding us that mainstream brands don’t always have us in mind. Beyond issues of representation, major athleisure companies often fuel the fast fashion crisis, mass-producing synthetic fabrics that take a toll on the environment. Instead of settling for companies that overlook Black women and sustainability, we can support the brands created for us, by us—ones that celebrate our curves, our culture, and our community, all while maintaining ethical and eco-conscious values.

For too long, mainstream brands have fallen short when it comes to diversity, sizing, and representation.Instead of waiting for these brands to catch up, Black women are building their own spaces and thriving in the process. Many Black-owned athleisure brands are also taking sustainability into their own hands. From using recycled materials to ethical production practices, these businesses are proving that fashion can be both stylish and responsible. With fast fashion contributing to 92 million tons of waste per year, supporting brands that prioritize sustainability is not just a trend—it’s a necessity. By supporting Black-owned athleisure brands, we’re not just investing in high-quality pieces—we’re investing in brands that understand our needs, our curves, and our culture. It’s about wearing pieces that make us feel seen, celebrated, and unstoppable.

As we celebrate Earth Day this April, let’s commit to shopping smarter. Investing in quality pieces from brands that align with our values not only keeps us looking good but also ensures that we’re making choices that benefit the planet. Here are five powerhouse Black women making major moves in the athleisure space.
