“Pour Minds” podcast hosts Drea Nicole and Lex P pulled up to GU’s Creator House for an intimate discussion about their journey as content creators. The dynamic duo is known for engaging audiences with subjects ranging from dating and adulthood to friendship and everything else in between. With no topic off limits, they brought their charm to “The Parental Advisory” panel on Friday with ESSENCE VP of Content Nandi Howard.
“This is a full circle moment,” Lex said. “…That fact that we’re here [GU Creator’s House] is just a testament to being consistent and believing in yourself.
Drea and Lex kicked the conversation off by reflecting on the course of their friendship throughout the years. The two shared how they used to work together before joining forces as business partners. “Wine Down Wednesdays” was one of their first pieces of video content that took off before they transitioned to “Pour Minds.”
“You have to be okay with your journey and start somewhere,” Drea said. “The beautiful thing about Lex and I is that it wasn’t perfect when we started. We didn’t have everything together. We were just trying things to see what was going to stick.”
The Houstonians, who now reside in Atlanta, resonate with listeners with their unfiltered conversations about the hottest topics. By keeping it real with audiences, they have built an immense following count of 319K online supporters that is consistently growing. Since starting on YouTube in 2016, “Pour Minds” has reached nearly 200K subscribers. Drea and Lex credit their online success to their authenticity, which allows them to relate with listeners of all backgrounds.
Their unique talent for captivating listeners has allowed them to carve their path in the podcasting space. With nearly 10 years of content creation experience, they shared their advice to emerging content creators about how to grow their platforms. Drea led by emphasizing the importance of consistency.
“As much as we have great chemistry, our show is funny, and now we’re getting great guests, we stayed consistent,” Drea said. “We have never skipped a week of recording the podcast in six years – even when no one was listening. Those are the key and pivotal moments separating successful people from those who are not.”
Lex urged others to stop clout chasing and instead focus on sharing authentic content.
“We’re stuck in these viral moments and chasing clout rather than getting good content,” Lex continued. “…Be true to yourself and stop trying to have a viral moment.”
