Beyond Utility: How Kotex Is Bringing Skincare Science To Your Period

From pH-balancing technology to Gravity Core absorption, learn how Kotex products are prioritizing vaginal health and skin-deep comfort.
Beyond Utility: How Kotex Is Bringing Skincare Science To Your Period
By Niya Doyle · Updated March 27, 2026

The emphasis on skincare seems to be everywhere these days. While typical skin-loving ingredients such as Vitamin C and plant oils are found in the natural world, other ingredients such as niacinamide and hyaluronic acid have made their way into our body washes, blushes, and mascaras. This shift toward ingredient-conscious living raises a natural question: what products are next for a clinical makeover? The answer is hitting the feminine care aisle.

Kotex recently relaunched its period products with more than just utility in mind, leaning into enhanced menstrual hygiene technology. The new BioCare line of pads and liners is engineered with pH-balancing properties designed to match the specific environment of the vagina. A healthy vaginal pH level ranges from 3.8 to 4.2 on the scale, and maintaining this acidity is a functional necessity. An unbalanced level in this area can cause immediate discomfort, unpleasant odor, and itching.

“The skin on the vulva may seem like any other skin on the body, but it is extremely fragile and is actually more acidic,” explained Dr. Haily Puckett (DNP, WHNP-BC) in an interview with Essence GU. “The environment in general is just supposed to be acidic. So whenever it’s not, it can throw off pH imbalances in the future.”

In addition to these pH-balancing options, Kotex released a Bamboo line of pads and liners that are ultra-soft, fragrance-free, synthetic-free, and dermatologist-tested. All these new offerings feature what the brand calls Gravity Core technology, which is designed to pull liquid to the bottom of the pad to reduce surface moisture and odor.

“I think when we think about our products and in our pads, it’s very similar to beauty. Everything is so personal, and everyone has different needs. We want to have more options to be able to help, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with this new portfolio line,” said Jessica Lutchen, Associate Director of Kotex.

Despite the rise of alternative menstrual products like cups or period panties, pads remain the primary choice when Miss Flo visits, particularly among younger women, according to a study by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This enduring popularity is likely why the category is finally seeing a high-tech evolution.

I put the products to a real-world test, starting with the Bamboo Ultra Thin Pads during the first night of my period. While the material was exceptionally comfortable to sleep in, I did wake up to a small amount of leakage—a common hurdle for bamboo-based textiles. For the day ahead, I switched to the BioCare Ultra Thin Pad. It held up through eight hours of movement with a moderate flow before needing a change. While the internal pH-balancing effect is difficult to “feel” in real-time, the physical performance was impressive. The pad moved with my body rather than against it, and the wing guards stayed securely in place to prevent side-leakage.

Not all pads are created the same, and Kotex has successfully reimagined the category to prioritize skin health alongside absorption. If a product can keep you dry while simultaneously stabilizing your natural chemistry, it moves beyond basic hygiene into the realm of genuine wellness. In an era where we obsess over the pH of our facial toners, it only makes sense to extend that same standard of care to our most delicate areas.
